Ashley Scoggin is a former University of Nebraska basketball player. She now plays for UNLV. It was recently announced that she has filed a lawsuit against her former Nebraska basketball coach and athletic director due to inaction after reporting an inappropriate relationship with her former associate head coach Chuck Love.
According to the Associated Press, Scoggin had an internship in the athletic department in the summer of 2021 and told Love that she might want to be a coach one day. He then invited her to work at a table in his office.
Love asked Scoggin to get drinks with him sometime, which Scoggin declined. However, after multiple requests, Scoggin eventually said yes. They met a few days later and Love asked if she had “ever done anything with a coach before.” The relationship soon turned sexual and Scoggin reports that she couldn't say no due to a fear of retaliation.
Some of Scoggin's teammates were suspicious of something going on between Scoggin and Love, so they set up a plan to catch them. They were able to film Scoggin in Love's hotel room at an away game and later showed the video to head coach Amy Williams.
Instead of talking to either of them in private, Williams held a team meeting and allowed everyone to share their opinions about the relationship. Scoggin says that this meeting ended up being hours long with other people explicitly judging her.
Love was suspended with pay in February of 2022 and Scoggin was released from the team on the same day.
Scoggin also reports that she didn't know any information about her Title IX protections.
It is apparent that the University of Nebraska athletic department failed Scoggin by refusing to acknowledge the power imbalances in the relationship. This isn't the first time that a sex scandal has been revealed between a coach and an athlete, but hopefully, this case will bring to light the pattern of unspoken abuse between female athletes and their coaching staff.
