Bre Cavanaugh is a former Division I basketball player at Fordham University. Bre spent one season at the University of California-Berkeley but transferred to focus on health. In her two seasons with Fordham, Bre was an MBWA and BCANY Player of the Year, Atlantic 10 Basketball Player of the Year, led Division I in total minutes played (1,242), and was a team captain. Bre Cavanaugh sat down with us to talk about her recruiting and transfer process and gave advice for future and current college basketball players.
Advice from Coach Stephanie Gaitley
One of the things that [Coach Gaitley] expresses to us is that we get to be here. A lot of kids are fighting for your position or spot to be on the team in general.
Why Fordham?
I always go for the whole family atmosphere…As soon as I walked on campus, I literally said “This is it.”
Transferring from UC Berkeley to Fordham
One of the main reasons why I transferred was because I got my 6th concussion out there…I had to go home to Pittsburgh to recover for 7 months. We figured we would open up my recruiting and stick closer to home.
Essential qualities for captains
As a leader, you have to be able to hold your teammates accountable and you also have to lead by example. You have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Red flags recruits need to look for
I would say that if you are going on a visit and they just strictly talk about basketball, that should be a red flag. That just means they just want you for basketball. There's more to you than basketball.
