6 Biggest March Madness Underdogs From Selection Sunday

6 Biggest March Madness Underdogs From Selection Sunday 6 Biggest March Madness Underdogs From Selection Sunday

Both brackets have been unveiled this Selection Sunday and it kicks off the madness that occurs this month. Some teams will enter for the first time in program history, and some had major comebacks this to make the cut. Here are some of the small teams from Selection Sunday that could make history this month:

Men's Basketball:

1. Stetson University

Stetson University was selected to participate in the program's first-ever March Madness tournament. They were chosen as the 16th seed in the East Division and will play one of the heavy favorites to win it all this year…the UConn Huskies.

The Hatters earned their bid by winning the Atlantic Sun Conference. They started off the conference tournament with a convincing win over Queens University of Charlotte. They then pulled off a one-point win over Jacksonville University by making a three-pointer in the last four seconds of the game. Stetson finished off their dream tournament run and won their first-ever ASUN Championship by three points. The Hatters sure have their work cut out for them against the Huskies, but lead scorers Jalen Blackmon, Stephan Swenson, and Aubin Gateretse will certainly give them a run for their .

2. Long Beach State

Long Beach State secured their NCAA tournament birth with a win over UC Davis in the Big West Championship. This is the program's first NCAA bid since 2012. The team secured the 15th seed in the West Division and will play against the massive University of Arizona team.

This team will especially be one to watch because the program's head coach, Dan Monson, was fired only six days ago. However, Monson was allowed to continue coaching for the remainder of the team's season. After his firing, Long Beach went on to win three games in three consecutive days, including the Big West Championship. Only time will tell how many more games will have with Long Beach. Hopefully, leading scorers Marcus Tsohonis, Aboubacar Traore, and Lassina Traore will be able to postpone his leave.

3. McNeese State

McNeese State University earned its first March Madness bid since 2006 on Selection Sunday night. The Cowboys had an exceptional season, winning 19 more games this season than the 2022-23 season. McNeese has only lost three games this season and never lost by more than three points.

McNeese State was selected as the 12th seed in the Midwest Division. They will play against the number five-seeded Gonzaga. Leading scorers Shahada Wells, Christian Shumate, and DJ Richards, Jr. hope to continue their Cinderella season with brand-new coach Will Wade at the helm.

Women's Basketball:

1. Texas A&M Corpus Christi

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi won their first-ever Southland Conference Tournament and punched their ticket to the program's first NCAA tournament appearance. Corpus Christi defeated both Southeastern Louisiana and Lamar University, whom the Islanders had lost to earlier in the season.

The Islanders were awarded the 16th seed in the Portland 3 Division and will face the number one seed of the entire tournament, the University of South Carolina. Lead scorers Alecia Westbrook, Mireia Aguado, and Paige Allen will have to be at the top of their games when they face the undefeated Gamecocks.

2. Drexel University

Drexel University earned its third-ever bid into the March Madness tournament on Selection Sunday tonight. The Dragons were awarded the 16th seed in the Portland 4 Division and will face the number one-seeded Texas University.

Drexel won its third CAA title against Stony Brook, who had beaten them twice in the regular season. Drexel was the 7th seed in the CAA tournament. The Dragons had to win four games in four days to clinch the title. They won the first two games by two points, the third game by only one point, and the fourth by a more convincing eight points. Drexel will face a giant in the first round, but with leading scorers Amaris Baker, Brooke Mullin, and Chloe Hodges at the wheel, Texas might not be as safe as some think.

3. California Baptist

California Baptist University will enter the program's first NCAA tournament. CBU won their second Western Athletic Conference title but were unable to accept the automatic bid when they won the title for the first time four years ago.

In 2021, California Baptist was in its third transition year from moving from to . According to NCAA rules, teams transitioning into Division I need a four-year transition period before they can compete in NCAA tournaments.

CBU won the title by one point on Saturday and has only lost three games in the entire season. They were awarded the 15th seed in the Albany 2 Division and will face #2 UCLA. The Lancers will certainly put up a fight against the Bruins and they will be relying on leading scorers Chloe Webb, Kinsley Barrington, and Anaiyah Tu'ua to show up big.
