Vince Farfaglia is the founder of the summer baseball league called the South Florida Collegiate Baseball League (SFCBL). Farfaglia played college baseball at Polk State College and Francis Marion University. After graduating, he then started the SFCBL in 2007. In this week's episode of the Prospect Blueprint, Vince Farfaglia talks all things summer baseball.
Farfaglia's journey starting the SFCBL
Kelly Kleinman: “Briefly take us through that journey from being a college player to being the founder of this terrific summer league.”
Vince Farfaglia: “In South Florida in general, summer collegiate ball was nonexistent. I saw it as an opportunity to be able to put this in place in South Florida and attract some of the best players from around the country.”
How signing to a summer league works
Kelly Kleinman: “How are players selected and assigned to teams?”
Vince Farfaglia: “We generally start signing at the beginning of August. We generally get a lot of the same programs that send us players every single year.”
What a summer baseball schedule looks like
Kelly Kleinman: “What can a player expect when he arrives in southern Florida?”
Vince Farfaglia: “An average week is going to be a Monday, Wednesday, Friday with single games, Saturday is double headers, Sunday we like to give them off days so that they can go to the beach and relax and recover, Tuesdays and Thursdays we have organized strength training in the mornings…”
What are the costs for summer ball athletes?
Kelly Kleinman: “How is it structured from a logistics standpoint–how are lodging, travel, and costs to players being handled?”
Vince Farfaglia: “The league is a charity organization. Each team is owned by individual owners and are simply members of the not-for-profit organization.”
The summer ball coaching staff
Kelly Kleinman: “What makes up your coaching staff? What are the criteria that go into finding coaches?”
Vince Farfaglia: “We have a very rich alumni of retired major leaguers and professional players.”
