Recruiting Horror Story: When Skill Isn’t Enough

Recruiting Horror Story: When Skill Isn’t Enough Recruiting Horror Story: When Skill Isn’t Enough

Sometimes, even the most skilled athletes don't get the college offer they were hoping for. This happened to a football recruit when he attended a camp for a university he was interested in.

Going into the camp, he was excited about the possibility of receiving an offer. told him that they typically extend offers to those who perform the best at this camp and that it was a great opportunity for him to show the coaches what he could do. He prepared to perform to the best of his ability.

Throughout the entirety of the camp, he consistently performed the best in his position. He talked to one of his connections at the university and his connection was confident that he would move forward in the recruiting process and most likely receive an offer. This player was ecstatic! He was proud of his performance and had a good chance of getting an offer.

When it was time to determine who won the camp, he became nervous. He knew he was somewhere at the top but wasn't sure where. He knew to get an offer he probably had to be in the top 3. After a lot of anticipation, he won! He had placed first in the camp and couldn't be happier.

Despite having placed first, he never got a call back. After a few weeks he reached out to his connection who informed him that they decided to extend offers to the players who ranked 2, 3, and 4.

He couldn't believe it–after working hard and performing well he still didn't receive an offer. Even worse, he knew he couldn't have done anything differently. The reality of recruitment is that sometimes, things just don't with a university or coach and it isn't always at the fault of the athlete.

However, in the end he received another offer and is now playing football at a school he loves! So if you want to make it to the college level, effort, skill, and perseverance are all key.
