“There's not many things less important than the score at halftime.”
– Bill Self
Bill Self has been the head coach at the University of Kansas since 2003. In over 20 years, Self has won 2 national championships, 13-straight regular season Big 12 Conference titles (NCAA record), and has a home record of 299-17. Bill Self has also been named Big 12 Coach of the Year eight times. In 2017, Self was named to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Self is an athlete himself, as he played at Oklahoma State University for four years. Bill Self obviously knows the game of basketball. His words about halftime may have been actually about basketball, but they translate well into other aspects of sports.
It can be frustrating when other people are way ahead of you in your sport. They might be faster, stronger, or technically better than you, but you have to remember that you are only at halftime. The work you put in from now on is the work that really counts. If your goal is to play your sport in college or make it to the professional leagues, then that is your final buzzer. You can't let other people get in the way of your progress. You have so much effort left to give!
