“With the absence of pressure, it's hard to do great things.”
– Geno Auriemma
Geno Auriemma is the head women's basketball coach at the University of Connecticut. He is the second-most winningest coach in college basketball history with 1,206 wins. He has led the Huskies to 11 NCAA national championships, 22 Final Fours, 57 conference championships, and six undefeated seasons.
Coach Auriemma has been at UConn since 1985 and has been named the Naismith National Coach of the Year eight times, AP National Coach of the Year nine times, and WBCA National Coach of the Year seven times. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. Aside from coaching on the court, Auriemma has also held the women's basketball team to a 100% graduation rate for 4-year athletes.
Geno Auriemma has built the UConn program into a team that is consistently one of the best in the country. That doesn't come without pressure. Every year that UConn won a national championship, doubters would say Auriemma couldn't do it again. He proved them wrong 11 times and secured himself as one of the greats. Embrace the pressure that comes with being great. They can't be mutually exclusive terms.
