If you're anything like me you grew up in a house full of hockey players so you had access to basically any gear you needed…but in reality, hockey is expensive and so is the equipment. However, there are some tricks to finding affordable gear for all your hockey needs.

Look for Used Equipment

Buying used equipment is one of the best ways to save money when it comes to hockey. Most areas near rinks have used hockey shops where you can find any equipment you could need. This is especially recommended if you are not done growing yet since you'll need new gear more frequently.

Choose Durability

When looking at new gear, it's important to do your research on what you are buying. You want to find equipment that is going to last, so if you do buy new gear, seek out sturdy brands compared to more flashy gear. It may cost more now, but can save you big bucks in the long run!

Look at Last Season

A majority of equipment brands come out with new updated gear every year. A nice trick to save money is to look at what they sold in the previous  years. Chances are the equipment is just as good and significantly cheaper.

Research Online

During the summer months almost all hockey brands have blow out sales. This is when you need to buy your gear if you are looking to save money. Taking the time to research when those sales are can save you thousands. 

Bundle With Kits

If you are just starting out and haven't bought any gear yet, take a look at the kits most hockey brands offer. They often bundle everything you need into one package at a hefty discount.

If these tips to save money are still not enough in letting you afford to play the game you love, I encourage you to reach out to the rinks in your area to see if they have had any donations or unclaimed lost and found. I found my favorite set of gloves in a donation bin at my rink when I was younger, so you never know what you may find. Hockey may be an expensive sport, but with a little research and creativity, it can still be affordable.
