You might recognize cross country and coach Connor Green because we have a separate part 1 interview with him! Coach Green has previously been a college assistant coach and a high school track and field coach. In part 1, Coach Green gave us the inside scoop on cross country and track and field recruiting. Today, Connor Green is informing us about what it is like to be a cross country and track and field coach and how to succeed in college and after college.

Seeing the growth is so much more important than just the coaching.

1. How would you describe your coaching style?

– What do you find most rewarding about coaching?

I am a very athlete-first style coach. I find that by having open lines of communication with our athletes, we get the best out of them. Personal bests and school records are great, but seeing an athlete overcome something that has been stopping them from succeeding is what is truly the most rewarding. This doesn't just have to be in athletics, students who struggle with academics and study really hard to earn a grade they never thought they could is just as rewarding as that new long jump PR.

I had two athletes who were competing at the regional championship meet during their junior years. These two had grown up together, played multiple sports together, and were great friends. They both came into the event seed high in their events and we thought there was a chance they could win their events. They also happen to be competing at the same time as each other so they couldn't cheer each other on. I will never forget when they both found out that each one had won their event. You could see the pure joy on their faces at the fact that their best friend succeeded. This is what I love about our sport.

2. What advice would you give an athlete to help them do well both on the team and in class?

Take advantage of study hall hours. They are required, so why not use them? Talk to professors/TA as much as you can. Be proactive, if you know a class is hard, get a tutor on the front end. Do not wait until it's too late!

3. If an athlete is looking to become a coach, what advice would you give them?

Staying within a program as a graduate assistant is always a good idea, but I recommend branching out. Learning from other coaches, in new situations. Comfort is great, but true learning happens when discomfort shows up.

I'd say 90% of coaches want to help new coaches. All you have to do is ask. Volunteer, get a graduate assistant position, and prove you belong. You do this by learning, working hard, and not waiting for things to fall into your lap.

4. Can you share stories of athletes that have gone on to do great things after college?

One athlete, who I coached all through high school in track and field, as well as during her college career as her coach, has recently gotten her Ph.D. Watching her grow and become the great person she is during those 8 years was fantastic. A lot of ups and downs, but now she is working in Ireland at one of the top universities and is experiencing amazing new things in life.

Seeing the growth is so much more important than just the coaching.

5. What are 3 words your players would use to describe you?

Kind, sarcastic, and thinks he's funny.
