Tip #1: Be Active!

As a high school athlete, it is important to participate in as many clubs and outside tournaments/games to gain experience and get noticed. “Compete in as many competitions as you can get,” Coach advises, adding “Get competition strong” to her first big recruiting tip. Not only will this help athletes become more competitive and strong, but can help them adapt to different scenarios as well as different teams, people, and coaching staff. She also adds that for golf, good events to attend are the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and the Peggy Kirk Bell (PKB) events.

Tip #2: Watch Your Attitude

Coach Bonacci mentions that the most important quality in a golf recruit is “a good attitude–someone that handles adversity well.” It's important to note that during the recruiting process, recruiters not only notice how well you play but how well you act in different environments. Luckily, this is something that can be developed and improved in the competitions or camps you attend. So put yourself out there and don't let the pressure get to you!

Tip #3: Get Digital

A must during the recruiting process is being on a coach's radar from the start and showing your interest right away. Recruiting sites can be your best friend because, according to Coach Bonacci, they “allow for videos, scores, and transcripts…it allows me to see the entire student-athlete on one page. The visits then allow me to get to know the person.” Reaching out, writing emails, and answering in a timely manner are all important things to keep in mind as well.

While touring a campus or meeting with a coach and potential school, it is important to ask as many questions as you can and show your interest. This can help with scholarship offers or even a good spot on the team. “Do ask a lot of questions and have questions for the coach as well,” Coach Bonacci advises, but be realistic.” Don't expect immediate answers on scholarship amounts available. There are a lot of factors that go into given amounts that develop over the school year.”
