College track and field has many different events that need different equipment. This is why track and field facilities are so important. They need to be versatile for all running, jumping, and throwing events. Here is a list of the top 5 Division III indoor and outdoor track and field facilities.
1. University of Chicago
Ted Haydon Track at the University of Chicago is a 400m track with 8 lanes named after coach Ted Haydon who came back to coach after he was an athlete at the University of Chicago. The track consists of high jump pits and throwing cages so all events can have their own area to succeed. Chicago also has the Henry Crown Field House where there is a 200m banked indoor track with jumping pits and throwing cages inside so that all athletes can compete.
2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Henry G. Steinbrenner Stadium at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has a 400m eight-lane track with a turf field in the middle. The stadium holds about 1,000 fans and includes ramps and an elevator for those who need ADA access. It also has an area for jumpers to practice and an outdoor area for the throwers to be able to practice and compete. MIT also has an indoor track on the second floor with six lanes and an infield in the middle.
3. Tufts University
The Dussault Track at Tufts University is a six-lane outdoor track with a turf in the middle for football and soccer games. It also consists of different jumping pits and throwing cages for everyone to compete. In the Tufts indoor sports center, there is a 200-meter indoor track where there are also places for the jumpers and throwers to practice and compete inside.
4. Amherst College
The Neuhoff-Lumley Track at Amherst College is considered the third-oldest collegiate NCAA football stadium. It consists of an eight-lane, all-weather track and a new press box which makes it so Amherst College can hold many meets a year. There is also an indoor track that circles the perimeter of batting cages and tennis courts. It also has multiple jumping pits so that the track & field athletes have the ability to practice in the warmth.
5. Carnegie Mellon
Gesling Stadium at Carnegie Mellon University was completed in 2007 but was resurfaced in 2016. It consists of an eight-lane track and a turf field in the middle where it seats about 3,500 in the grandstands. It also has a state-of-the-art video scoreboard so that the college can host meets. The Jack Skoog Indoor track was built in 1999 and is a 200-meter track with six lanes. It also has an elevated pole vault runway, and a dual pole vault and long jump/triple jump runways.
