Russ Martin is entering his third season as West Texas A&M's offensive coordinator after eight years at the helm at Colorado Mesa. Martin compiled a 56-33 record with the Mavericks and led them to three Rocky Mountain Championships and an NCAA appearance during his time there. In short, Martin knows how to get results. Here are his tips for getting the most out of your recruiting journey.
What is the most important quality you look for in a recruit?
Talent to help us win, academic success to graduate, and character to put it all together.
What is the best way for a recruit to get on your radar?
Get a coach's honest recommendation and video.
When should an athlete contact you, what is the best way? (age, grade, time of year, email, phone, or other)
We focus on their senior year. The best time is spring of Junior year. First send us a coach's recommendation, then your academic status, and a video of your talent.

What are your expectations for incoming players in the classroom, in the weight room, and on the field?
Same as all returners. Excel and give your best… character, mind, body, and spirit.
What are the do's and don'ts of being recruited?
Do: Take care of business academically (get updated early) and provide video evidence of your play. Communicate with schools of interest.
Don't: Over-do it, have mom or dad call to tell how good you are, or say that the coach didn't use you correctly.
What is the best advice you can offer a recruit?
Be academically qualified. Do the EXTRA work to show you want to excel in college. A great work ethic for your high school team can go a long way.

What really jumps out to you when reviewing a recruit's highlight tape?
Put the best stuff on right away! Show each phase of your talent.
What are the main do's and don'ts for a recruit's highlight tape?
Do: Put the best play right away, highlight yourself and make it easy to find. Show great consistency, and each phase of your skill set.
Don't: Make it too long and make it all against just one or two teams.

When do you recommend recruits put together and share their highlight reels? Is it best to make their highlight reel during the offseason, in the middle of season, or after each game?
After Junior year for us and update it throughout senior season about every 3rd game. Then send a final highlight.
What advice do you have for recruits who get turned down by their dream schools? What are their options if they don't gain the recruiting attention they desire?
KEEP OPTIONS OPEN EARLY and evaluate schools for the big picture. Academics-Athletics-Personal-Social.
How big a factor is social media when recruiting players? What advice do you have for athletes regarding social media?
Post positive information and be aware of negative posts and posts that will reflect “IT'S ALL ABOUT ME”.
