Coach Juan and his assistant have been nothing but the utmost professional, dedicated, caring, passionate, and committed team of coaches. I advise anyone who hasn't had a favorable experience with the program to leave and look elsewhere. No one has to stay in an environment you are not happy in.

The marijuana incident was the John Brown game in 2020. The girls were traveling. The dab pen was visualized by other athletes in her bag as well as while she was seen, hitting it. When a handful of athletes approached coach, one and the assistant coach about this they were told to leave it alone, since it makes her play better and because she was a valuable player to the team this was swept under the rug. This was the same athlete that was promised financial help, as well as made many promises. If you look at the timeline, there is a huge span of when they were told and when the athlete was let go from the team and the university. For this athlete, he definitely led her in the wrong direction making her empty promises and not being the leader or the man that he should’ve been as a coach. Remember in this situation he was supposed to be the grown-up and he definitely let her down. As far as the other athlete that was let go , that resulted because she lied about going back to her country as she was an international student and was actually partying with another student in another city and missed a game because she was not truthful about where she was. When this was found out yes he took her off the team, but she was not by far the star athlete. Let’s talk about the international student that he injected with a steroid injection into her injury, which no one knows where he would’ve gotten the medication from nor why he would be injecting a student athlete especially when the team has a team doctor. What about the last incident in which athletes were caught drinking one of which was underage. Why was only one of them kicked off the team? Why weren’t they all punished especially since Scu has a very strict no drinking policy. Abusive oh yes, he has thrown tables, chairs, yelled, screamed and demeaned athletes about their physical appearance . In fact, the latest conference game that the girls just played and lost he pouted after the game and told them that he did not want to see them but that’s what he does. I too have multiple texts about drama. This text ask me as a parent to let him be the first to know if I hear of any drama going on throughout the team. Their only winning season was in the year 2020. A handful of those players ended up with injuries some of which they could no longer play. Again he just threw them away. The thing I hate about all of this is that not one person has stood up or apologized to these girls for the things they have had to go through with this coach. But karma is a b . And it’s coming. He is going to slip up and do it to the wrong athletes and someone with some power is going to stand up for these athletes and put a stop to this. Girls he has taught u what u don’t want to be as a person, athlete or coach. Christian men are leaders and role models. They strive to make u not only a better player but a better person and I am truly sorry for the ones who have been hurt however you will become stronger because of this because u know your worth!!

Juan is very very manipulative and EMOTIONAL! I have seen previous comments stating similar things but it is very funny that he talks about how emotional women are but seems to be way more emotional than the average woman. He has forced multiple players to perform on injuries and a handful of them have resulted in very serious surgeries. I would also like to point out that juan does not put the best 11 on the field but instead chooses to play his favorites. This has resulted in not a single winning season. He likes to throw tantrums a lot and overall will make you feel so poorly about yourself. He will make you promises and tell you specific things but will go right behind your back and speak poorly of you. He is very unprofessional and the same rules do not apply to everyone. He has taken the joy out of the game for so many women and it is truly sad to see. Most of the time he will indirectly address you in team meetings, social media, and more in various negative ways. His communication is very poor and the minute you disagree with him then you are no longer needed by him. I cannot stress how manipulative he is and how poorly he speaks about players to other players. He loves drama and most of the time he is creating it. I would urge anybody reading this to please consider other options before playing for juan. It is an overall negative experience and it will damage your mental health in the long run. As per the other comments he will “lead” you on and then will dispose of you in the most embarrassing way. He is a liar and is not somebody you will want to represent. The team culture is beyond toxic and he plays a big hand in that. He will never admit to any of his mistakes or actions but instead chooses to blame players. If you decide to transfer he will speak so badly about you to other coaches and almost make it impossible to find a new university to play for.Think very carefully before you decide to play for him.

Wow… where to begin. Hearing that there is finally a place where I can share my experiences with Juan Castillo makes me thrilled. As a player that was “coached” by juan for many years, I find it to be the biggest regret of my life. When juan began to recruit me, it was an entirely illegal process as I was currently in contract with a different collegiate team. Before I came to SCU, I was made a number of promises that I trusted and was let down shortly after. I have screenshots and screenshots of texts from him that state things out of the ordinary from a college coach. Juan is nothing short of a tormentor and a creep. He harps on women he coaches and inappropriately comments on their body image in terms that do not relate to soccer. To the comment that stated juan was a disciplinarian, you are entirely correct. However, his discipline typically revolves around those that aren’t in his group of favorites. Juan’s favorite form of discipline is simply putting players on the bench for sticking up for teammates and disagreeing with his morals and playing tactics. Juan runs to social media to share his distress with “liars, unloyal people, drama starters, narcissists, & betrayers” yet he never remembers he is all of those things. He ruined soccer for so many women and has no guilt for doing so. As I recall after at least 3 of his previous players either quit or were kicked off, he posted a photo on Instagram excluding each of those players from the pictures. Not only is juan a horrible person, he also sucks as a coach. He has NEVER had a winning season and has NEVER placed higher than the last team when it comes to the SAC playoffs. Juan decides which people will play each game by which player kissed his butt the most at practice. I feel sorry for those that still defend him as he has clearly manipulated you into believing he is someone that he’s not. Players that continue to support juan are the reason he continues to get away with his perverted, immoral, and disrespectful characteristics. I hope everyone else who has been a victim of juan continues to speak loudly and clearly for all future soccer players that he might recruit.

Throughout my time at SCU I realized what I never wanted to become. Juan was one of the worst coaches I ever had experience with. From the drama, unequal treatment, and having to play on injuries. When I realized what my injury had become I was forced to push through. When I look back on my experiences with the SCU womens soccer program I regret listening to what came out of his mouth. from the promises to what he thought about you. In his eyes you would never be good enough and you’re only good for him when you can perform. The one thing I learned from him is your only valuable when you can make him look good. For the players looking into southwestern Christian womens soccer program, you need to run away from this coach. The other post that states that we are not being honest with our experiences was never in the situations that we were in. Once everything finally gets out about Juan the Womens game will change and become what is supposed to be. This coach doesn’t have any good qualities and is not someone that needs to be coaching women. All I know is what we as athletes experienced has been hidden and thrown away.

Talks more about players to other people than to the actual player. Loves to create drama. Divides his own team by playing favorites. Very disorganized. Does not listen to outside advice. Will not change once he has his mind set. Body shames girls and comments on them constantly. Sends posts about previous players making fun of them to feed into his absurd need for drama. Says he wants the best for his players yet does not help them fix mistakes unless they specifically go to him and ask (most of the time doesn’t make sense)Overly emotional to a the point of kicking and hitting things. Has and will never have a winning season because of these attributes. A sorry excuse for a coach.

Coach Juan De Dios Castillo isn’t’ a perfect man but he did teach me what not to do as a college coach. I am currently a college coach and all the things I went through at that program was toxic. Like everyone has said he does have his favorites but the way he handled it was unprofessional. I was a favorite of his and I was promised so much by this coach but was let down too many times. From a kid coming from nothing he took me in and called me a “daughter”. I trusted him with a lot of personal information and he was there until I didn’t follow how he lead. A good leader will represent what they preach and he isn’t a man that does that. He hates DRAMA is what I’ve read but that is a lie. He fed into the drama of the team. What I mean is he would create the separations on the team. He would talk so much crap about players to other players. I eventually started to realize some of the toxic things he would say or do and tried to avoid it as much as possible. Instead of going to him about things I needed to improve on I went to our assistant. Let me tell you he did not like that and he made it his mission to bring me down. My goal was to focus on getting my degree as I was the first generation to get my bachelors in my family and was so close to getting out of SCU with my degree. It did not happen at SCU and I ended up playing somewhere else. When I finally got out of SCU and found another school to play for and finish out he tried to ruin my character to other college coaches. It was frustrating because he is a grown man and it felt like he wanted to see me fail. That fueled me to be better than him and instead of bashing his name I used him as someone that I didn’t want to become. Learning to be a college coach takes knowledge of the game but it also takes you being a good person towards EVERYONE that is on your team. The culture of SCU as a college is hypocritical not only the soccer program but the school as well. The school itself was really good at taking money and not telling you what it was for. They robbed me of 3 classes as I was thought to graduate on time but my advisor did not do her job. She insisted of creating courses and telling her students to take them because she said we needed it for our degree. Not only did I get robbed at the education piece, I also wasted my soccer talent. I would of never went to SCU if I wasn’t promised by Juan that he could take me to the next level in soccer. God put me through this path to learn what not do and be as a college coach. Their is no regret because of what I learned but if you are looking into this school make sure you ask about the education piece. Also, make sure the scholarship he gives you stays consistent through out the years. My scholarship that was given to me was not accurate the years I was there. He promises so much but does not fulfill anything that he says he will do for you. I am speaking the truth and just want players that are thinking of going to this school to realize that you can find better. You can find a school that will truly care for your education and a coach that stays true to his word and follows his own expectations. The community at SCU is toxic all around and you deserve better as a College Athlete. I hope this helps future athletes looking into this school.

First off coach juan is a disciplinarian that also shows grace to his players. In fact the one “star” Player he caught smoking weed was kicked off the team immediately after he found out about it(with still one semester of eligibility left) . Last year he had an international player that was by far the best on the team and he separated her from the team as well for discipline issues. Didn’t matter if she was the best. He will treat everyone equal. That poor girl that “wasn’t important for the team and got separated” that is mentioned in one of the comments, the parent failed to mentioned this was not her first incident and had been put on probation and she knew about it as well.. Is he perfect? , no he isn’t but he does try his best and truly treats everyone equal. I’ve NEVER seen or hear him verbally abuse anyone!. And lastly he hates drama, he doesn’t encourage that at all. He likes harmony and yes a healthy competition for sure. I wouldn’t have wanted to play for anyone else. Coach Juan has been great to me and the teammates I have spoken too about it which are the vast majority!!

As a parent I have witnessed this coach destroy several student athletes thru his poor excuse of a Christian Coach! He has thrown chairs and been verbally abusive in locker rooms. He has paid for certain students apartment and food knowingly knowing they were using and smoking marijuana allowing a dab pen to be present in this player’s possession on an away game exuding this offense to his players stating “if it makes her play better so be it”. He has obtained and given an international student with no medical coverage steroid injections obtained from who knows where and injecting her because she was his star forward! He recently caught several students drinking alcohol which is a violation per school policy however he only kicked off the athlete that wasn’t valuable to him and let the other 4 continue to start and play on the team. He punished the players that questioned his decision when a team meeting was called by the captain. He has done so much shady stuff and continues to try to tear these athletes down! He is definitely not a good role model and poorly represents any part of Christianity. He is supposed to be teaching our children and instead he is the poorest excuse of a coach I have ever seen. He loves drama and in fact texts other parents asking them to share any rumors that we hear. Oh and to top it off asks parents to write checks directly to him when donating or purchasing equipment for the team. Several thousand dollars have been given to him with the request that the checks be written to him so that the school didn’t decrease his budget!

I wish I knew about this website 2 years ago when I was being verbally and physically abused by coach juan and coach Chris. Juan ruined soccer as a game for me and took away time he not only promised to me, but also my family. He is equivalent to a highschool that feeds into gossip like no other. He picks and chooses who he plays on a system many people might know called playing favorites. He is a selfish person and an even worse coach. I regret playing under him. He lies to his players and created the most miserable and toxic environment I have ever experienced (I’ve been playing soccer for 21 years). I lover soccer before I played under juan. He ruined a game I once lover and cherished. He tells everyone what they want to hear and puts on a facade to make himself seem like the perfect coach. He has crossed many lines regarding personal relationships and used social media to comment in appropriate things under his players posts, while also using his story to share negative and undirected posts towards past players who he has kicked off for reasons that no one agrees with. He should not be trusted as a women’s soccer coach in any way shape or form.

After playing under juan for a year… i quickly decided to transfer. Juan is disorganized and DEFINITELY plays favorites. He is beyond unorganized and if you are not one of his favorites then you will not be playing. He is not fair and can feed into gossip and create it. He lets specific players get away with certain actions while punishing other plays for the same actions. There is simply no winning with juan. He has a tendency to lie and manipulate players. He see’s no wrong in what he does and refuses to take accountability for his actions. He creates a toxic environment and pits players against players. He does not have appropriate coach-player relationships and often times talks poorly about players to other players. The team culture is very toxic and mentally draining. After playing under my current coach I now understand that his actions and the way he speaks about players is not appropriate and it does not create a good environment for his players.

Juan is nothing short of an awful coach. “Coach” should not be in his description. He picks favorite players (as previous reviews might entail) and makes soccer miserable for every other person who doesn’t fall in his perfect line of gossip and betrayal. He has lost way more players than he has kept yet he never speak about why unless he is lying to other players for the reasoning. He has had players get caught for many things, yet sweeps it under the rug. However if you aren’t a favorite, you get kicked off the team. He has never had a winning season because again he is not capable and should not be a collegiate coach. He fails his players and he fails the school he “coaches” for. I myself became a coach after playing for him and have had the opportunity to see the lack of respect, honesty, and game knowledge he had and is still portraying onto new girls he recruits. He never mentions the wrong doings he’s done and never will. Do not recommend.

One of, if not the, best coach’s I’ve had. Juan really cares about his players, not just as a player but more as a person. He puts in a lot of effort to his team to make it the best possible. He creates a very safe environment for all players to be comfortable and have a family. He always is trying to help you improve yourself on and off the field. Juan’s style is playing simple. We always should play how we practice, and we have had so much success with that. All of this has made our team culture one of the best teams I’ve been on. Everyone is super supportive and caring and is here to play for each other.

Coach Juan is an incredible coach that I had the privilege of playing for. I developed so much as a player but more importantly as a person. He goes above and beyond for his players and wants to see them succeed in life outside of soccer, as well! As a coach he will push you to your limits and challenge you to be the best player you can be. He sees potential in his players and helps them to see their own potential too! Team culture is a top priority for him and he works hard to continue improving it as players come and go. Great guy and great coach!
