My experience on the women’s lacrosse team under coach Short was difficult at first but overall a big growing experience and great community. You get out of it what you put in, if you go for individuals and show the coaches you want to take the time to really improve then you’ll get a good response from him. Overall, he is a pretty understanding coach and wants the best for each of his players.

As an athlete that was ecstatic to play lacrosse at a DII “powerhouse”, I was fully disappointed with my time on the Rollins women’s lacrosse team under the coaching of Coach Dennis Short. While Coach Short is extremely knowledgeable in the game of lacrosse and has many accolades to back this up, the culture that is fostered under his leadership was by far the worst team culture I have experienced in my entire life— an isolating experience that led me to leave the team. While all sports teams have their problems anywhere an athlete chooses to go, I wish that I had known that what I was told by Coach Short during the recruiting process was not accurate. It was a priority of mine to commit to a program where there was a sense of community amongst players— not to all be best friends, but to have one another’s back as fellow teammates. I was told during my recruiting process that no athletes left the team for any other reason other than injury-related incidents. During my time on the team, I found that this was not true. ”Cliques” of girls remained on and off the field. Coach Short explained his viewpoint that COVID-19 created many of these problems for the team cohesiveness, but after speaking to several upperclassmen, it became clear to me that the team operated extremely similarly prior to COVID starting in March 2020. Beneath the “powerhouse” team lies a group of girls that are cutthroat and mostly unkind. Those that were kind and team players transferred.
