Outside of the college, and when I met him during recruiting, Coach Alex seemed like a nice, chill kind of guy. But, once on the team, I quickly found out that he was extremely erratic, immature and irresponsible. It was almost embarrassing- like having a man child. His temper tantrums were of epic proportions- throwing objects, jumping up and down, cussing, etc. Sometimes he would cry. At one point he even took all of our gear (for 2 months) after losing a game. It definitely did NOT help motivate the players. In fact, it created a climate of discouragement and self-defeat. He knows the game. I will give him credit for that. but he rarely teaches strategy. Practices consisted mostly of repetitive drills to the point of exhaustion and injury. This affected us in tournaments- yes, we paid the price for his poor coaching. But, then he beat us down for the losses. It was one vicious cycle. And he was completely unaware of how he was destroying the morale and the motivation of the team. There was a total lack of self-awareness. He shows little concern for the emotional and physical well being of the player. He is extremely shaming, sometimes relentlessly targeting certain players (and these would be the hard working conscientious players- those who wouldn't stand up for themselves against him). He creates a culture of discouragement and brings ZERO positivity to the game. Even when we would win, it wasn't good enough. It was brutal, and I couldn't get out of there fast enough! Side note: My teammates were great and SFA was an exceptional school.
