Gretchen Walsh is a junior on the swimming team at the University of Virginia and recently made her mark as one of the fastest swimmers in the world.
Walsh made history on Wednesday during her 50-yard freestyle swim at the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships. In this one race, Walsh broke the NCAA, US Open, and American records with a time of 20.57. Later in that meet, Walsh made history again in the 200-yard freestyle relay when she became the first woman to swim it in under 20 seconds. Walsh's split was a 19.95. She went on to win the title in both events that night.
Breaking records isn't new to Gretchen Walsh, though. Wash is a 3x NCAA champion and holds the NCAA record in five different events. At the 2023 World Championships, Walsh took home gold in the 400 medley relay and bronze in the 50 fly.
With Virginia, Walsh is a 2x All-American, 2x All-ACC, and is an ACC champion in nine different events.
Virginia is currently leading the women's meet in points, but it will all come down to the end of the meet tomorrow. Watch out for Walsh and the Cavaliers as they continue their journey to the NCAA championship!
