The is a database that allows current athletes to put their name out there to notify other college coaches that they want to transfer. Entering this database tells other coaches that the athlete is available to receive an offer and a scholarship.  This is a very useful tool for all college athletes that want to transfer to a new college or university. This process may seem complicated but it doesn't have to be–once you are sure you  want to transfer, here are 6 transfer portal tips that will help all athletes if they want to enter this database. 

Be 100% sure that you want to transfer

This decision will change your whole college experience. You will have to adapt to a new college and get recruited again. If you are 100% sure of it, it would be the best for you.

Be honest

When transfering, you have to be honest with yourself to make sure you are making the best decision for you. You have to be honest with your current coach and tell him the reasons why you are leaving. Also, be honest with your possible future coaches by telling them your goals and objectives by transferring. Being very transparent with everyone involved in this process can make the process easier.

Keep your options open

Transferring is a lot like going through the recruiting process again. Make sure you are open minded and reach out to as many schools as possible. Try to look for schools that have the best balance of what you are looking for and don't forget the reasons why you are transferring.

Tell your current coach you want to transfer before you enter the portal

This is not mandatory but it is highly recommended. Doing this will be helpful because the administrative office can put you into the portal. Additionally, coaches recruiting you may want to contact your current coach so it is a great way to do all the process without any misunderstandings. 

  1. an eye on academics  

When you are reaching out to new coaches make sure you talk about academics. You have to check if your credits will transfer or if you will have to take the classes again and make a decision considering all these factors. 

  1. Stick to your story

When you are transferring, a lot of people will ask why, will tell you not to or will share their version of your reasoning with other people. What you have to do here is control what you can control–state clearly your reasons (the ones you want to share, that is) and just go with that version the whole time with everyone. If you want to decrease drama, the only one that should know the whole version with all the details is you.

  1. Be grateful 

be aware of all the good things your university has offered you, of the skills you have learned and for being part of the team. Express that gratitude to your coach. When you have a new school also thank him/her for the opportunity of joining the team.
