Double Check To Make Sure You Have All Your Necessities

Forgetting something at home while going to an away game is annoying so before you leave, remember to check you have everything you may need for a long ride. Don't forget any uniform items, like compression shorts or extra socks. Also try to grab a healthy snack like a granola bar or piece of fruit (and some snacks for the trip home as well). My personal favorite item to bring on long rides is headphones–they allow you to lock in and listen to your own music and get you ready for the game. Make a list of the things you bring to an away game and check it before walking out the door!

Use Your Time on the Road (or in the Sky) Wisely

You may be thinking that you just want the trip to be over if you're traveling to a faraway game. But, the trip to your game can be the best time to begin mentally preparing yourself to play. If you are feeling tired, a nap on the first part of your trip can help you feel refreshed and give you more energy. Getting homework done during your trip can offload your plate and clear your mind as well (and some planes offer wi-fi so you can access online assignments). Then it's best to turn on your favorite hype music before you compete. This will get the adrenaline pumping and start the process for game time.

Be Ready to Adapt to Any Situation

Traveling to other schools to play means that you may need to adjust your personal pre-game routine–remember, not all teams have the same facilities or commodities as your own and may throw you off. If this happens, just stay calm and try to replicate your routine to the best of your ability. Always remain focused on the game and never let a change in your routine throw off your mindset.

Get Ready to Compete

Once the pre-game routines are finished then it becomes business as usual. The team warm-up gets you ready to play and usually remains the same for home and away games. As you walk out onto the field it's best to remember your why. Why do you play this game? This can motivate you and gives you a purpose when you take the field, no matter where you are.

Traveling can be hectic, but creating a routine allows you to feel comfortable going into a new environment. Away games are all different in their own way, but using this list can change how you think about traveling and how to best get yourself ready to play.
