Henry Zimmerman is a senior thrower for the University of Nebraska Division I track and field team. Henry is a very driven individual who excels in the weight room, on the track, and in the classroom. Along with his sport, Henry is pursuing a major in communication and a minor in psychology. From the early morning lifts to the late-night study sessions, this article will provide you with some insight into Henry's daily routine at the University of Nebraska.
6:30 – 7:00 AM Wake Up and Head to Memorial Stadium
Henry jumps out of bed at 6:30 am and makes his way to the stadium. Once he gets there, he heads to the “Landing,” which is a fueling station for athletes at Nebraska. As a Division I track and field athlete, nutrition is crucial. He grabs a protein shake, a sodium packet, and some carbohydrate gummies. After consuming all of these, Henry is ready to go!
7:30 – 10:00 AM Dynamic Warmup and Morning Lift
Henry's strength coach takes him through a foam rolling session, a stretching session, and then a dynamic warm-up. Henry is lifting heavy in this phase of his training so he needs to make sure his body is properly warmed up. After his warm-up, Henry hits the weights! Some of his regular lifts consist of power clean, snatch, bench, squat, and deadlift. Olympic lifting is a big part of his training.
10:30 AM Post-Lift Meal + Shower
After his morning lift, Henry heads back to the “Landing” and grabs two protein shakes. After this, he heads home and takes a shower to get ready for class.
11:00 – 12:15 PM Class #1: Organizational Communications
As a communication major, one of Henry's required classes is organizational communications. This class is about communication in the business world. This includes everything from sending out memos to writing proper emails to coworkers.
12:20 PM To-Go Lunch in Training Table
Henry grabs a quick to-go box lunch from the Nebraska Training Table. He has to rush to his second class of the day but needs to fuel his body at the same time. Henry usually goes with the chicken and rice option.
12:30 – 1:45 PM Class #2: Rhetoric in Civic Life
Henry heads to his second class of the day located in Avery Hall. In this class, he learns about how language is manipulated both in politics and in the media.
2:00 – 2:30 PM Rehab at Bob Devaney Center
After class, Henry heads over to the Bob Devaney Center to do his rehab. Henry recently underwent double hernia surgery and is slowly starting to regain 100% strength. His team athletic trainer takes him through a variety of exercises and drills to regain strength and keep him healthy.
2:45 – 5:00 PM Practice
Henry heads to track and field practice! His practice usually consists of throwing hammer and performing a variety of drills for proper throwing technique.
5:30 PM Shower at Home
After practice, Henry heads home and takes a nice cold shower.
6:00 PM Dinner @ Training Table
Henry heads to dinner at the Nebraska Training Table. He usually chooses the steak and pasta option at dinner. Henry is looking to gain his weight back from surgery so it is important he consumes enough calories.
7:00 – 8:30 PM Homework in Stadium Academic Center
Henry completes his homework for the week in the DJ Sokol Enrichment Center. Many of the athletes at Nebraska do their homework in this facility.
9:00 – 10:15 PM Relaxation and Free Time
Henry gets about an hour to himself to relax and enjoy some downtime. Typically, he likes to watch something on Netflix.
10:30 PM Time for Bed!
Henry heads to bed at 10:30 and gets ready to do it all over again the next day!
