Anthony Randall is the head swim coach at Marist College. Coach Randall is entering his third season with the Red Foxes. He also has coaching experience at Fresno State and the University of Rhode Island. Randall was even a student-athlete himself, competing in Division I swimming at URI. We were lucky enough to have Coach Randall provide us with some amazing tips for swimming recruits!
1. What are some of the most important qualities you look for in a swim recruit?
We look for recruits with a good work ethic, a desire to learn, and a good personality.
2. What is the best way for a recruit to get on your radar?
Just reaching out, whether it be through our online questionnaire on our website or with a well-written personalized email.
3. What are the must-dos and don'ts when being recruited?
Must Do's:
- Ask Questions, the more the better.
- Be honest with injuries or struggles (we all have them).
Don'ts:
- Don't come in with a previous idea of a school or coach from friends or family. You should make your own decisions and opinions about each school.
- Don't act in a way that you believe the coach wants to see. We want you to be authentic.
4. What do you find most rewarding about coaching?
The most rewarding thing about coaching for me is seeing my athletes grow to become better people through swimming and diving.
5. What does it take to be successful on your team?
- Have the right priorities (academics, athletics, and socially).
- Follow the steps to reach academic success.
- Be coachable, and focus with intent in training.
- Believe in your team and coaches.
- Honor your teammates and family through your effort and dedication.
6. What are 3 words your players would use to describe you?
Curious, fun, and caring.
