I'm certain we've all heard about CBD, but you probably have a lot of questions about it, especially as an athlete. Questions like: is it legal everywhere? Will it negatively impact my athletic performance? Are athletes even allowed to use it? Or maybe you're just curious about how or if it can even benefit you.
I can't speak for every person or athlete, but personally, CBD has made a huge difference in my life. Some of the benefits I've experienced in my own life are improved sleeping, eased anxiety, pain relief, and lessened muscle soreness. If you're on the fence about adding CBD to your supplement rotation, here are some answers to common questions you may have.
What Are Some Benefits of CBD?
Athletes generally experience a higher level of pain than non-athletes. In addition, athletes are 2.5 times more likely to suffer from chronic injuries than non athletes – and this is something I can definitely attest to. I spent half my life playing softball and more than 7 years as a catcher. Throughout those 7 years, I had numerous knee injuries – torn MCL, sprained MCL, torn meniscus, and ultimately significant cartilage damage to both knees (arthritis). All of the stress on my body ultimately has caused chronic knee pain and issues. In my experience, many of my peers have turned to prescription medications, painkillers, or just trying to fight through the pain until it's too much to handle. I did the same for a few years until I discovered CBD.

How Does CBD Relieve Pain?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a component of the cannabis plant, but it is completely different from Marijuana and THC. Studies have shown that CBD in the body can interact with neurotransmitters in the brain in a way that can reduce inflammation, and ultimately pain. It is in a similar process in the brain that CBD can also ease anxiety. Overall, it can have a positive impact on bodies that have been through wear and tear.

How Can Athletes Use CBD?
My favorite way to incorporate CBD into my life is as massage oil, or even putting a few drops of it in my drinks. However, it's extremely important to note that currently the NCAA bans the consumption of cannabinoids, although CBD does not contain psychoactive properties. My advice: if you're a current NCAA athlete, use it as an oil and maybe only during your off-season.
