Coming out of high school, now-UNC quarterback Drake Maye was a highly touted prospect. In his redshirt college season, Mayne was nothing short of incredible—although the Tarheels lost the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl in the last 20 seconds by a final score of 28-27 to number 15 ranked Oregon, it was indeed a season worth celebrating.

Besides leading the team to a 9-5 record, Maye helped lead North Carolina to the ACC Championship Game, where they fell to Clemson 39-10. Even in a loss, it was a noteworthy accomplishment. In fact, it was UNC's first appearance in the ACC Championship since 2015—a noteworthy accomplishment by Maye and company indeed. In his first full season, he ranked 3rd in the nation in passing yards, with 4,321 yards, and tied for 3rd in the nation with 38 passing touchdowns. His 38 passing TDs also tie the single season record, which had previously been held by ACC and North Carolina Legend Sam Howell, who now is a member of the Washington Commanders in the NFL.
Mayne's impressive season didn't go unnoticed—he was awarded the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year, ACC Freshman of the Year, ACC's most valuable player, and Offensive Player of the Year. One could say Maye hasn't even reached his peak yet. He has emerged as a true leader and competitor for this Tarheel team.
