This fall, he enters his 22nd coaching at Trinity and in that time frame, he's posted an impressive 104-20 record, including perfect 8-0 records in 2008, 2012 and 2016, and the best winning percentage in the history of Trinity football at .839. Recruits can learn a lot from Coach Devanney's experience. Here are his top tips for those looking to make it to the next level. 

What is the most important quality you look for in a recruit? 

Athletic talent. All the intangibles are great, but the first thing that stands out is the ability to compete athletically at this level.

What is the best way for a recruit to get on your radar?

Get us a small amount of information to allow us to quickly evaluate if this is a recruit worth pursuing. film, transcript, test scores.

When should an athlete contact you, what is the best way? (age, grade, time of year, email, phone, or other)

What is the best advice you can offer a recruit?

Be proactive. Ask specific questions to identify if a school is truly interested. Have a trusted source who can help you determine your level of ability to setup a list of reach schools, good fits, and a couple of safeties.

What are the main do's and don'ts for a recruit's highlight tape?

Put your best plays first.

When do you recommend recruits put together and share their highlight reels? Is it best to make their highlight reel during the offseason, in the middle of season, or after each game?

Junior highlight reel should be sent during the recruit's junior year in either winter or spring.

What advice do you have for recruits who get turned down by their dream schools? What are their options if they don't gain the attention they desire?

Being told “no” is okay. It's valuable information. Find the next best option.

How big a factor is when recruiting players? What advice do you have for athletes regarding social media?

Be careful with social media. More and more coaches are checking your accounts to look for red flags.
