' has an impressive record, to say the least. He's been a part of the Big West Conference and United Soccer Coaches' coaching staff of the year, landed #1 recruiting classes, and won multiple conference titles, and landed in the tournament three consecutive years from 2014-2016. Since he knows a thing or two about winning, we asked him what recruits can do to get on his radar and become part of a great program.

Q: What is the most important quality you look for in a recruit?

A: I think that they have the same on the soccer field that they do in life. Being passionate, hardworking, being a man of character. Also what they can do, like technique. If they are passionate they will always try to get better.

Q: What is the best way for a recruit to get on your radar?

A: Being persistent. He will miss an email here and there, persistence is huge! Come to a camp and come to a game. Some people get upset and that it won't happen. If you keep trying and show you care will help get on his radar.

Q: What are the top 3 things you look for in an athlete?

A:

  1. Values align
  2. You have to be technical. The way we play the game, you have to be able to execute skills to a specific level.
  3. Athleticism.
  4. Passion. Have passion for the game. If things go wrong and it is difficult you're gonna quit. If you're so passionate you will keep trying until you develop your skills in the sport!

Q: When should an athlete contact you? What is the best way that they can get a hold of you?

A: An athlete should contact me as a sophomore. Starting the process early can help get you on my radar. Again, be persistent and always follow up.

Q: What are the Dos and 'ts of being recruited?

A:

  1. Do it yourself. In terms of not your dad and mom.
  2. Get help with the process – ask for advice from friends, family, and coaches. But, it needs to be you to make the decision.
  3. Be authentic. Don't be anyone else but yourself. “If you're not yourself, you're not gonna make it.”
  1. Don't let your parents be in charge of your process.
  2. Don't think that sending an email out means you're going to be recruited. Show up at camps, follow up, reach out, and be persistent! If you don't do that, you're not doing enough.
  3. Don't live out somebody else's dreams. Go to the school that is best for you! The only person that knows what's best for you, is you! What is the best path for one person will not be the best path for you!

Q: What jumps out at you when reviewing a recruits highlight tape?

A:

  1. Show what you're different at.
  2. Show what you're great at! Show him that you are different and what you're elite at!
  3. If you want to play in college you need to play at an elite level. If you have one elite quality you have a better chance at getting recruited.
