3 College Teams Represented in the MLB Draft 3 College Teams Represented in the MLB Draft

170 picks have been announced in the draft, and many of them were NCAA athletes. LSU, the University of Virginia, and the University of Florida were all represented well. Here is a list of 14 NCAA players who will be starting a new career in professional baseball.

1. LSU

The National Champions LSU had SIX picks this weekend. The Tigers are going to be well-represented next season. and Dylan Crews made history, becoming the first teammates to be selected as picks number 1 and 2 in the MLB Draft.

  • Paul Skenes: Paul Skenes was the first overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. The pitcher had an impressive season, winning awards like the Dick Howser Trophy, National Player of the Year, National Pitcher of the Year, first-team All-American, and College Most Outstanding Player. Skenes deservedly took the first spot in the draft and will be playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates. 
  • Dylan Crews: Dylan Crews was the second overall pick. The outfielder took home the Golden Spikes Award, first-team All-American, SEC Male Athlete of the Year, and College World Series All-Tournament Team during this 2023 season. In his 3 years at LSU, Crews totaled 58 home runs, 286 hits, and 184 RBIs. Crews went as the second overall pick by the Washington Nationals. 
  • Ty Floyd: was the 38th overall pick. The pitcher played in 55 games in his 3 seasons with the Tigers and was awarded the College World Series All-Tournament Team, Second-Team All-Louisiana, and Second-Team All-South Region. Floyd was the 38th pick by the Cincinnati Reds. 
  • Grant Taylor: Another pitcher for the Tigers, Grant Taylor became the 4th player from LSU to be drafted into the MLB in 2023. Unfortunately, we did not get to see Grant Taylor play for LSU this season, as he suffered an elbow injury before the start of the season. In 2022, Taylor played in 17 games with a 5.81 ERA. Taylor was the 51st pick by the Chicago White Sox.
  • Tre' Morgan: Tre' Morgan was a first baseman for LSU. Morgan had 20 home runs, 256 hits, and 149 RBIs. Tre' Morgan was the 88th overall pick by the Tampa Bay Rays.
  • Gavin Dugas: Gavid Dugas was a graduate student at LSU. Dugass had 44 career home runs, 179 hits, and 148 RBIs. Dugass was the 165th overall pick and will join teammate Dylan Crews at the Washington Nationals.

2. University of Virginia

The University of Virginia had 4 draft picks this weekend. Virginia was eliminated in Omaha this year, but the team did well enough to have 4 players represent the Cavaliers. 

  • Kyle Teel: was the 14th overall pick in the 2023 draft. The catcher was named first-team All-American, Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year, the Top NCAA Male Baseball Catcher, and ACC Player of the Year. Teel had 28 career home runs, 236 hits, and 155 RBIs. Teel was the 14th pick by the Boston Red Sox.
  • Jake Gelof: is a third baseman and became UVA's home run leader and RBI season record holder this year. He has 48 career home runs, 189 hits, and 186 RBIs. Gelof was a second-team All-American, Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, and a Dick Howser Trophy Semifinalist. Gelof was the 60th overall pick by the Brooklyn Dodgers.
  • Connolly Early: was a pitcher for UVA. He was a third-team All-American, third-team All-ACC, and was one of the top transfers in the country prior to his commitment to UVA. Early was the 151 pick by the Boston Red Sox. 
  • Ethan O'Donnell: Ethan O'Donnell was an outfielder for UVA. He was awarded first-team All-ACC, ACC Academic Team, and was another one of the top transfers in the country. O'Donnell had 29 career home runs, 177 hits, and 111 RBIs. Ethan O'Donnell was the 168th pick by the Cincinnati Reds.

3. University of Florida

The University of Florida had four MLB Draft picks this year. Florida made it all the way to the College World Series Championship, before losing to LSU. These Florida teammates will become fierce rivals come the next MLB season. 

  • Wyatt Langford: was an outfielder for the Gators. Langford had 47 career home runs, 180 hits, and 120 RBIs. He was a first-team All-American, Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist, First Team All-SEC, and on the  College World Series All-Tournament Team. Langford was the fourth overall pick by the Texas Rangers. 
  • Hurston Waldrep: is a right-handed pitcher that played for the Gators. He played in 19 games this season and was awarded second-team All-American, ABCA First Team Southeast All-Region, and NCAA Gainesville Regional All-Tournament Team. Waldrep was the 24th overall pick by the Atlanta Braves. 
  • Brandon Sproat: Another pitcher from Florida, Brandon Sproat played all four seasons with the Gators. He played in 56 total games and was awarded ABCA first-team Southeast All-Region, and second-team All-SEC. Brandon Sproat was the 56th overall pick by the New York Mets. 
  • Josh Rivera: Josh Rivera was a short-stop for the Gators. He had 35 home runs, 211 hits, and 139 RBIs. He was a 3x second-team All-American, was on the College World Series All-Tournament Team, and was first-team All-SEC.
