Neal is easy going and does not too intense. He unfortunately only focuses on his top swimmers, which the majority are international. The efforts of the slower swimmers in the pool, academically, and community involvement is not recognized nor appreciated. He gives too much power to a very judgmental assistant coach, Athena. But if you want to swim but not live and die by swimming like other D1 programs and want to have fun with great teammates FSU is your place.

With all of the drama around terrible coaches in D1 sports it has been such a blessing to swim for Neal. He has been such a wonderful mentor and coach to me over the years. He and the other coaches care about us more than just as athletes. I’ve improved so much as an athlete and individual just by his example. Neal has been wonderful to swim for! Thank you so much Coach!

I had such a good experience being coached by Neal. Neal made a lot of changes this year, he brought in new coaches (positive people) and held all of the negative and lazy athletes accountable (no more missing practices). The team is so much better for these changes. Last year we had a couple of negative coaches and negative athletes. They've thankfully moved on and the team is SO much better off.

much better vibe than past couple of years. The new coaches are so much more positive. Along with Coach Studd they have made this year so much better. My teammates are also no longer allowed to float.

Thank you for everything that you did for us this year. This ACC experience was amazing and I've learned so much. I appreciate this team and these coaches.

This coach goes out of his way to communicate with each of us on the team and he created an amazing environment at ACCs. I’ve never been part of a team that is so tight. It’s because of Coach Studd’s leadership and example. Negativity comes only from those who are not in it to win. We have no room for that on this team.

Thank you Coach Studd for everything this year! You’ve made the team stronger by cutting out the part that was dragging all of us down. We appreciate you and had a fantastic year! Thank you for pushing us to be better!

Couldn’t be happier swimming for FSU. This program surpassed all of my expectations. Coach has done a fantastic job of making the team swim fast and holding everyone to a high standard. Go Noles!

Love swimming for this program and for Neal. Especially now that some of the negative coaches and teammates have gone! So much better to swim for and around positive people!

I am grateful to have been a part of and contribute to the team. Neal was always accomodating with class schedules, and pushes us to take school and practice seriously.. I attribute a lot of my successes these past few years to him pushing me to be better. Never settle.

He is very motivating and believes in the program which makes for a great practice environment. He invests in his athletes and takes the time to meet with us one on one. He’s honest and sometimes that can be tough to hear, but he is also easy to meet with and truly cares about us and our success in life.

The head coach Neal and the rest of the staff are amazing. He’s passionate about coaching and holds us to a high standard. This is D1 after all! The only reason to be mad is if you don’t travel or don’t work hard and show up to practice. That would be on the you, not coach. Our team works hard, there are a couple that don’t and they are no long part of our team or they are on the way out. The rest of us are killing it and having fun.. FSU is for hardworking serious swimmers that also have fun.

You fail to show up to practice because you were out partying and he holds you accountable and you don’t travel.. sounds like you just came on here to retaliate by trashing him… Come onnn grow up! yeah he does have favs… people that show up to practice and work hard! Coach doesn’t deserve this!

Neal Studd is a knowledgeable coach that definitely cares about the whole team. He has helped me surpass my goals every season. Thank you for believing in me and always pushing me to be better.

What you see is what you get with Coach Studd. He’s fair and honest and expects a lot out of us. He cares about us as individuals as well as an athlete. Work hard and communicate with coach you will have an awesome experience at FSU, don’t and you’ll probably just blame him and post ugly comments.

FSU swimming is a fantastic program. I have had nothing but positive experiences with the team and the staff. Some of us on the team have read these ongoing comments and have said nothing. This is going to stop. Coach asked us what we wanted this year more than anything and it was for people to be held accountable. This season so far has been fantastic. The coaches are holding us accountable for missing practice and everyone is working hard. The team loves FSU, we love the staff and we love swimming.

Very poor communication skills, plays favorites, unorganized, HORRIBLE TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS, does not listen to players' wants and needs, basically runs the team as a business rather than focusing on the athletes as people. I have had many friends leave the team and/or quit the sport of swimming as a whole because of how the team was run.

Neal Studd is a coach who only cares about his own self image and not the swimmers. He will move swimmers into his group to claim their success at the expense of the swimmers training. He is barely ever on poolside, leaving the other coaches to take a lot of responsibility. He is hard to work under as a coach hence why three have left this year. He also averages around 7 transfers a year as people begin to realise as a coach he doesn’t have their best intentions at heart.

Disrespectful to swimmers. He bullies kids and makes fun of them. He never coaches, he stands on the side of the pool and complains about people and his health issues. This team is going down hill. He needs to be replaced to save the talent of the swimmers.

Unavailable and unapproachable. The team is too big to pay attention to everyone and he doesn’t seem to care. Bad communication between coaches that starts from him.

Neal is a dishonest person. He will promise scholarships and will say you do not need it in writing. He is not a man of his words. He also is not involved and carries an energy of not caring. The makes the team culture not good. The team does not care and it shows.

I have nothing positive to say about my experience swimming for Neal. I love the team and the school but he is not a good coach or person. He doesn’t get to know any of us and most of us feel like we have no relationship with him. It is hard to communicate with him because he is intimidating and when you try to address your concern he makes it seem like you hurt his feelings. I would transfer out if I could but I haven’t swam well here because of how unhappy I am and how bad of a coach he is. So I feel hopeless. I would say he only cares about his fast swimmers but he doesn’t even care about them as people, he only cares about money and how he appears to others. I wish I realized how fake he was while I was being recruited. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!

All Neal Studd does is talk about his money. He is a boastful individual, and he does not have a single ounce of care for any of his athletes. It is so embarrassing. I was ashamed to be apart of a team led by this man who has a significant lack in morals. Prior to COVID, when we got our butts handed to us from UF, he refused to let us shake their hands. This is unheard of for a swim meet. It was so embarrassing that I texted their head coach and apologized. I really hope he leaves soon and someone more passionate comes instead. I quit swimming because of how miserable he made it. He picks favorites and stares at other females in an inappropriate manner on deck. He also is way too involved with wanting to know gossip about swimmers and talking poorly about them to other swimmers. I would run if you were looking at this program. He is also known for following inappropriate instagram accounts with females flashing their body parts. It is disgusting because they are our age and he has a little daughter. I would rather eat glass than swim another year under him.

When I committed to come here promised that once I improved to score at ACCs I would be considered for scholarship money because of this I turned down a 50% ride to a mid-major school and 75% financial aid support to Kenyon. Sophomore year I scored at ACCs and he still refused to give me scholarship money. Junior year I scored even more points at ACCs and when I went to talk to him he told me I was not good enough to be put on money and that I needed to make NCAA. This was rude and made little sense as only three people on the team made NCAA that year and there were people who stayed home from ACCs that were on money. Senior year came around and I was injured so I did not travel and was not really competing. Not once did he talk to me about my injury or if I was okay. When it came time for ACCs he did not release who was going until two weeks before the meet. By Neal doing this it was turning people against each other rather than bringing people together before one of the biggest meets of the year. Once we got to ACCs we only had one team meeting and in that team meeting it was very negative and he had nothing positive to say. Once the meet was over he did not have anything to say to us. I was looking forward to this meet because ACCs were combined and it was the first time combined. This meet was the worst experience I had in my college career. There was no team environment at the meet because he allowed people to come and go whenever they wanted. He did not comment on very many people's swims but rather just allowed them to walk by after a good swim. If he did congratulate you it was a very fake "good job". Throughout my four years, I think I spoke to Neal a total of 3 times. Every time I spoke to him he would lie about whatever we were speaking about or had a BS answer. After four years of swimming, one would think they would have a good relationship with the head coach, incorrect. I am also staying an extra year and was trying to be a GA for the team. I talked to him multiple times about this and the last time when I tried to get an update on if I was being considered because it had been a while and I had not heard anything he told me to get out of his office. Then a few weeks later when I had missed my senior banquet because I was sick, he tried to be all nice and friendly asking where I was and why I did not tell him I was sick and that he missed me. This was all for show as I know he did not really care how I was. Overall, Neal is a very fake coach who pretends like he cares when you are on your recruiting trip but he really does not at all. Once you commit he only cares if you travel and even then he does not care that much about you. What made my experience tolerable was my teammates on the team and Dan Carrington. I would not recommend coming here as Neal shows no leadership skills and has an extremely toxic team environment as he has favorites and only truly cares about them.

I would NEVER recommend Neal as a coach to ANYONE. He is very fake when he recruits to make you think he cares about you. He then recruits way too many swimmers and doesn’t care about any of them. He does not engage in practices or invest in his current swimmers. He absolutely does not build you up as a swimmer or a person. Instead of being a role model (as a coach should be) he is an image of what we all strive not to be. He makes inappropriate comments, violates title IX, has been under investigation, has been confronted by his team captains to change for the better and has not changed at all. Having Neal as a head coach is a disservice to FSU athletics - the past, present, and future swimmers on the team. Myself and more teammates than not have struggled with mental health after our time on the team because of his leadership and the poor environment that he creates. If you are considering FSU swimming as an option for yourself, I advise you to look elsewhere. It is a shame because FSU is a great experience otherwise.

Neal Studd lacks every quality that a good person and coach should have. He shows no respect for his athletes or colleagues. He is the definition of putting on a facade when he knows important people are around. Beyond his lack of effort around his work, Neal has been under Title IX investigation for his numerous offenses that should have led to his termination. It is evident that his connections take precedence over the severity of these offenses which is why he somehow still has a job. His continued employment shows there is corruption within the world of athletics at FSU.

I wish I had a good experience with Neal and enjoyed my time on the swim team, unfortunately this could not further from the truth. Neal will tell you exactly what you want to hear on recruiting calls, and you will come to learn that these are nothing but fake promises to get you here. I went through an extremely tough time and got absolutely no support off Neal. This speaks to his attitude that his swimmers are nothing more than pay checks to him. I love FSU, but I did not have a good experience on the swim team.

Neal Studd is a disgrace to the athletic department of FSU. He makes highly inappropriate comments about females on deck. Aside from his lack of morals and character, the team has declined significantly in the rankings. This has to do with his toxic team leadership and culture that he causes. This is the worst performing team at the school because Neal is a terrible person.

I have almost lost my eligibility twice due to Neal Studd’s disregard/carelessness for NCAA rules. There is no accountability from him, the other staff, or the FSU athletic department when it comes to multiple rule infractions and student-athlete mental/physical health. Too many people have come forward with stories and no action is taken.

Horrible coach over recruites and then leaves you out to dry if you don’t perform should honestly be fired as the head coach for FSU swimming and diving

My experience under Neal Studd was subpar to say the least. He is a manipulative person who knows his way with words, and only cares about his boat, & boasting about his bonuses at the end of year. Would not be surprised if he tells his staff to create fake accounts here to boost his reviews. He is not fit to lead a program as reputable as FSU.

I can’t say I had one good experience when it came to Neal studd. He cares more about the money you’ll make him rather than his athletes mental and physical health. I would not go to a school where Neal is the head coach.

Stop recruiting so many people and you would have less problems. Neal is a smart guy but is obviously using FSU as a stepping stone in his career. He doesn't really care about his swimmers, plain and simple. Unless you kiss @$$ or swim fast, you won't get much attention from him. That is, unless you are a good looking female.

Preaches a “genuine” and honest team culture while doing nothing and often the opposite to ensure the wellbeing of his student athletes. He seems to value his swimmers as nothing more than easily replaceable roster spots and honestly should not be allowed to continue to work in the sport of swimming.

I'm in disbelief that Neal is still coaching. He has created drama within the team by talking about athletes with other athletes. His inappropriateness has gone as far as affecting people's mental health (which he doesn't take seriously). To hear from former teammates that nothing has changed is sickening. FSU athletics, please do better!

I'm unsure where to start when I think of Neal and how he shaped my experience as a student-athlete, the best word to use is trauma. He has no place being a coach, from his inappropriate sexual comments, bullying, and SEVERAL NCAA VIOLATIONS..I am disappointed that FSU still has him or his staff there. He is a liability to FSU athletics.

Neal only cares about himself and how he looks. He makes sexist remarks about people's mothers and sisters saying how attractive they are and etc. He bullies anyone who opposes him and is not a great coach at all. He only cares about what makes him look good.

Neal was one of the worst coaches I have ever experienced in my swimming career. I truly loved the sport, however Neal made both practice and competitions uncomfortable. His main concerns was him making money-everything revolved around Neal receiving a bonus. He picked favorites on the team, and made racist and sexist comments.

He cares about you if you will bring him a bonus, mainly the foreigners. Otherwise, I would look elsewhere. He makes people feel bad about themselves and will talk bad about you to other staff members. Not good for mental health. Too worried about his reputation and income at the sacrifice of young men and women.

Knowledgeable, but that’s about it. He has cultivated a culture where coaches make sexist and otherwise inappropriate remarks. If he or his staff find out that you are thinking about telling compliance officers of their NCAA rule violations, they will bully you into not doing it through humiliation and intimidation.

It seems Neal's only goal is to make himself successful. You can tell from his demeanor and how he speaks about his student-athletes that he does not truly respect or care about them. During recruiting, Neal stresses a transparent coaching staff and team values yet in fact it is the complete opposite. FSU has great resources but Neal is not one.

He is a fine coach. However, he is the type of coach that only cares about his appearance in the swimming world. He shows favoritism to those swimmers that swim well, again then making his appearance look better for recruiting and article purposes. He knows a lot about swimming, but isn’t a good leader and head coach material.

Neal acts as if he knows what it takes to be a head coach. He let’s the associate coaches do all his dirty work so that he never has his hands dirty. There’s no in person communication. They give athletes anxiety with their garnet and gold meet where they cut kids if you don’t go their standard times at the beginning of the season. Team is divided.

My entire experience swimming under Head Coach Neal Studd was disappointing. It is very clear he doesn't care about his athletes unless they are making him money. Mental health was never a priority to him and was never taken seriously. My advice is to look elsewhere if you want to enjoy your college swimming experience.

He's a nice coach, but is surrounded but "Yes men" who just agree with his coaching style. If you don't agree with his coaching method or him as a person he will talk badly about you behind you back to other coaches and even your teammates. He knows his stuff about swimming but is not a good leader.
