Unique experience to be coached by this man. His intensity and enigmatic character can only be described as one of a kind. Yes he can be scary. Some may describe as “mean”, but don’t let him hear that or you’ll be doing pieces until you’re regurgitating off port side. As a millennial cal rower, I appreciated this and I did feel as though he cared about his athletes despite his often surly demeanor - which was taken in good humor considering the elite nature of our team and goal for an IRA gold (which we accomplished btw). Perhaps a coach of a bygone era but still effective in making boats go fast and, for many, turning boys into men.

This man knows exactly how to take any program from whatever stage it is in to winning races. Put him in a high level program, and see them raise the standard and win more. Put him in a bottom tier program, watch them quickly rise through the ranks. Wish I could do another four years with him.

Lucky to have rowed under Geoff for 4 years. In my opinion, he was the epitome of a great coach. Made it very clear what it took to be GREAT and would give you every possible tool to become GREAT. Always available 24/7 to help athletes with absolutely anything, athletics or unrelated. Not only made us faster, but made us into better leaders, people, and athletes. Created a tight nit family who I still talk to all the time. Miss the glory days.

Rowing under Geoff was the best thing that's happened to me. I learned leadership skills, and pushed myself to achieve goals I never thought myself capable of. He is extremely knowledgeable about rowing, stemming from his 20 years working under and rowing for Gladstone. Extremely passionate too. Brought in amazing recruits, transformed our culture from that of a club team to that of a top tier IRA team. Very caring and available, always checking in with athletes, being flexible with practice schedules, etc. Extremely professional, kind, and caring. My teammates and I agree that he is a rare coach who makes it obvious that he cares and wants nothing but the best for his athletes.
