When it comes to fashion or the products that we use, many of us aim to use ones that represent our truest self. That's why choosing which brands to align with as a college athlete can be difficult because you want to speak for a brand that reflects who you are as well as your beliefs, values, and goals. As a college athlete with rights to your NIL and a social media following (big or small) it is important to promote brands that you believe in and whose values you share. Remember: the possibilities are endless
While social media is a popular NIL route, it's not the only way you can cash in. Over the past year, athletes have given lessons in their sport, participated in coaching clinics, or have even partnered with companies that have nothing to do with sports, such as video games or even air conditioning companies.
That said, even smaller college athletes can find success in social media marketing, should you choose that path. You do not need a huge following in order to work with top brands–you just need to find the right one that is interested in your audience.

Make it easy for brands to find you
In some cases, brands will approach athletes, but athletes should also be encouraged to go after partnerships themselves. If social media is the route you would like to take, be prepared to pitch your follower count as well as information about them. It is important to research what your followers would like, while also staying true to yourself as you create your own “brand.” The athletes who display their authentic selves and are engaging on social media will always be the best brand ambassadors over those who only share posts with no heart behind it.

NIL is an opportunity to build your own brand through your professional career. Plan it right, and it will benefit you far into the future.
