Q: How important is it for a recruit to play club sports?

A: Club sports can be a vital part of the recruiting process, but whether or not you should play on a club team depends on your sport. For instance, only 24% of college football players and 31% of college track athletes competed on a club team. These sports don't require as much time on a club team because these athletes receive a lot of recognition on the high school level. For other sports, however, club teams are a crucial part of getting recruited–around 90% of college athletes in soccer, basketball, volleyball, swimming, baseball, softball, and ice hockey played on a club team before college.

This is often because club teams offer elite competition across the nation. Many high school teams only travel around their state, whereas most club teams travel across the country. High school coaches and facilities are usually at a much lower level than a club's high-end facilities and knowledgeable coaches. Club teams allow players to showcase their talents in front of college scouts, as well as develop their skills during the entire year (instead of only during the high school season). If you are a gymnast, soccer player, basketball player, swimmer, or hockey player, you should definitely consider playing on a club team. For football players and track athletes, club teams might not be a necessity.
