Coach Short has been the Women's Head Volleyball Coach at Brown University for 24 years. She has won three Ivy League tournaments, led two teams to the NCAA Championship, coached 26 All-Ivy players, three Ivy Players of the year and two Ivy Rookies of the Year.

We asked Coach Short if she could offer some advice to the student-athletes who are looking to play for volleyball for . This is what she had to say:

What is the most important quality you look for in a recruit?

We look for multiple qualities.  Attitude, coachability, athletic, positional need and a great student.

When should an athlete contact you?

Sophomore year.

How should an athlete contact you?

1. Email 2. Phone

What really jumps out at you when reviewing a recruits highlight tape? What are the main do's and don'ts for a recruit's highlight tape?

High level of ability. Being tall and jumping high. Being quick etc.

When do you recommend recruits put together and share their highlight reels? Is it best to make their highlight reel during offseason, in the middle of , or after each game?

I prefer an unedited video. The most recent club match is another preference.

What advice do you have for recruits that get turned down by their dream schools? What are their options if they don't gain the recruiting attention they desire?

All recruits should talk to their coach to see what level they should play in college. Recruits should email at least 10 schools.

What camps, leagues, showcases and teams would you recommend a recruit to attend to gain exposure to volleyball ?

I recommend that they go to a camp at a college they are interested in.

How big a factor is when recruiting players? What advice do you have for athletes regarding social media?

We do check on them to make sure they have made some “good choices” on social media.

What is the minimum SAT/ACT score a high school athlete needs to have when applying to ?

SAT could change next year. But right now 600's minimum for each individual test. ACT we look for 29 or higher but typically 30 or more.

What advice do you have for high school or club coaches that are working with recruitable players? How can they make sure their athlete's get in front of the right people?

Coaches should schedule national tournaments such as USVBA qualifiers or AAU national tournaments.

What type of events do you recruit at?

We go to primarily USAVB qualifiers but also some JVA tournaments.

What advice can you offer a recruit?

Be proactive and email and call coaches themselves. We prefer parents not doing that for them. Be aware that coaches are around and that your attitude should always be team first.
