We saw some incredible talent in this academic year. The fall athletes kicked off the school year with a bang, and here are some of the players who topped the stat sheets and headlines:

Field Hockey

1. Jady van Gils

East Stroudsburg University midfielder Jady van Gils was the NFHCA National Player of the Year in 2023. Van Gils started all 21 games for the Warriors and totaled 10 goals and 5 assists. She was also a DII Honda Athlete of the Year Finalist, after helping ESU to a PSAC Championship and NCAA runner-up finish. 

Cross Country

2. William Amponsah

West Texas A&M University runner William Amponsah won the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship, beating the second-place runner by nine seconds. Amponsah was the NCAA Division II Cross Country Men’s Athlete of the Year, a USTFCCCA Cross Country All-American, and had an undefeated season

3. Lindsay Cunningham

Winona State University runner Lindsay Cunningham won the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship, becoming the fourth runner ever to run sub-20 minutes at the Division II championship. Cunningham was also the 2023 NCAA Division II Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year and won six cross country races in 2023.

Soccer

4. Sjur Drechsler

Florida Institute of Technology defender Sjur Drechsler was the 2023 United Soccer Coaches Men’s Soccer Player of the Year. The junior totaled 1,761 minutes, four goals, and two assists. Drechsler led his team to an NCAA semifinal finish. 

5. Mia Klammer        

College of Saint Rose forward Mia Klammer was named the D2CCA and USCA Women’s Soccer National Player. The junior totaled 18 goals and 17 assists in just 21 games. She tied the program’s single-season assists record, was named a first-team All-American, and was the United Soccer Coaches Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Volleyball

6. Kenzie Foley

St. Cloud State University outside hitter Kenzie Foley was named the 2023 AVCA Division II Player of the Year. On the DII stats sheet, Foley ranked first in kills per set, second in points per set, and fifth in kills. She was also named a DII Honda Athlete of the Year finalist and led her team to an NCAA tournament birth. 

Football

7. Zach Zebrowski

University of Central Missouri quarterback Zach Zebrowski was awarded the 2023 Harlon Hill Award. The redshirt junior set NCAA records for passing touchdowns (61), offensive yards (5,690), points (380), and touchdowns (61 passing and 2 rushing). Zebrowski is the first DII quarterback (and sixth ever) to throw over 60 touchdowns in a season.
