I'm sure we have all heard the phrase “time is ,” but in reality, time is a lot more than that and spending it wisely is essential. Time management is a skill that student-athletes have to perfect if they want to succeed in college. Because of commitments to and athletics, sleep and often take a backseat when athletes are choosing how to divide their time. But taking the time to rest, recover, and take a breath is important for athletic performance and overall sanity while maintaining a busy life as a college athlete. Here are three quick tips on how to fit self care into a hectic schedule.

  1. Making the Most out of your Commute

Every student-athlete has to get to class and practice so take the time you walk, bike, or drive to focus on yourself and mental health. Whether it's listening to positive or calming music (we have some great playlist on our Spotify), doing breathing exercises, or calling your parents or friends to catch up, using your commute to focus on positivity and de-stressing can be a game-changer.

  1. Unplug for 30 minutes a Day

While setting aside 30 minutes a day may seem like an eternity to a student-athlete, if you split it up it can be extremely manageable. For example, taking 15 minutes before bed and right when you wake up (or at any other time that works for you) to stay off of electronics can be a great way to focus on you. Spend this time stretching, journaling, or just relaxing–whatever fits your definition of “me time.”

Try to resist the temptation to spend this time on TikTok. When college students get on their phone or electronics, it is very easy to get overwhelmed with a booked calendar, upcoming assignments, the latest drama, and the hundreds of other distractions that the internet holds, which de-emphasizes your needs. Take time away from these distractions and focus on the positives in your life.

One thing that has been a game changer for me this semester is counting my blessings before I go to bed. I reflect on the people, and experiences that I am thankful for. It reminds me of the positive influences on my life and has helped me go to bed with a positive mindset.

  1. Change up your Morning Routine

While structure is great for college students, athletes already have a built in routine with the demanding schedule of practice and classes. Sometimes getting stuck in a routine can cause a mental “rut” that is hard to get out of. While you may not have control over class or practice schedules, you can switch up your morning routine.

For example, try adding something new like stretching, journaling, reading, or even a new or coffee item. Changing your routine by adding something positive and relaxing can leave you feeling refreshed and get you out of a “rut.” This is also a great time to unplug and prepare mentally for the day.

When life gets really busy, it's easy to think that you don't have enough time for self care. Making time for yourself is just as important as making time for school, work or your sport. 10 to 15 minutes can make a world of difference if you use it to your advantage and make the most of the time you have.
